<p>Originating in the Pacific Northwest, the CARE Project is coordinated out of the Center for Humanitarian Engagement (CHE) at Walla Walla University&nbsp;with partial funding from Adventist Community Services (ACS)&nbsp;at the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists, with oversight from the North Pacific Union Conference ACS. The CARE Project has a vision to increase involvement of young people in community service through a comprehensive, assessment-based engagement plan, supported by a small team of CARE Student Missionaries (SMs) and resident expert partners.</p>
<p>This project encourages students to bring their unique backgrounds, interests, and fields of study to partner with the local work of Adventist Community Service centers. CARE Student Missionaries will learn best practices for community development and gain hands-on experience, working closely with passionate professionals, volunteers, and community partners. Length of service options are 3, 6, or 9 months at the following location:</p>
<p>&nbsp;A Watered Garden Family Learning Center (AWG) in Everson, WA. is a non-profit organization affiliated with Adventist Community Services and the Everson Seventh-day Adventist church across the street. Through the guidance of the director, Cheryl Brown, AWG offers a myriad of educational and development opportunities for its primarily Hispanic immigrant community including weekly ESL, GED, and citizenship prep classes, a community garden, monthly nutrition-education workshops, and a variety of other community events as needs arise. It also serves as a community service hub for collaboration with other organizations. <li>Teach&nbsp;3 citizenship&nbsp;and&nbsp;3-4 GED&nbsp;classes per week; assist as an English teacher when needed.</li>
<li>Mentor and guide local high school students&nbsp;in their community service projects.</li>
<li>Attend and participate in&nbsp;2-3 weekly meetings&nbsp;with community partners to brainstorm and plan projects.</li>
<li>Help support with&nbsp;event planning, flyer creation, and distribution.</li>
<li>Assist with&nbsp;menu planning, shopping, and cooking&nbsp;for events.</li>
<li>Work with the&nbsp;CHE team on virtual projects like&nbsp;website updates, social media, and volunteer recruitment.</li>
<li>Contribute to long-term strategic growth initiatives&nbsp;for AWG.</li>
<li>Collaborate and assist Miss Cheryl with expanding AWG's reach by improving records, recruiting volunteers, and conducting a neighborhood surveys.</li>
<li class="elementToProof">Work closely with&nbsp;other interns and volunteers to support AWG&rsquo;s mission.</li>
